How to Choose the Right Tattoo Artist: 5 Tips for Finding the Perfect Fit

Updated: Aug 5

When it comes to getting a tattoo, the artist you choose can have a huge impact on the overall quality and experience of the tattoo. Here are 5 tips to help you find the perfect tattoo artist for you:

1. Research their portfolio: A good tattoo artist should have a strong portfolio of work that showcases their style and capabilities. Take some time to browse their portfolio and look for tattoos that are similar to what you have in mind. This can give you a sense of their skills and attention to detail, as well as their ability to bring your tattoo ideas to life.

I specialise in black and grey portrait and realism tattoos, so if you're looking for a tattoo in one of these styles, I'm the perfect fit. However, if you're interested in a colour tattoo, cover-up, traditional, or heavy linework tattoo, I would always recommend someone finds an artist who specialises in those styles as I don't.

2. Consider their specialisation: While some tattoo artists are generalists who can handle a wide range of styles, others specialise in specific techniques or styles.

If you have a specific tattoo in mind, it can be helpful to choose an artist who has a strong portfolio of work in that area. For example, if you're interested in a portrait tattoo, look for an artist who has a good reputation and experience with that style.

3. Check their reputation: A good tattoo artist should have a solid reputation. Look for reviews and testimonials from previous clients to get a sense of their professionalism and the quality of their work.

You can also ask your friends or family members for recommendations or check with local tattoo shops for recommendations.

4. Consider their location: While it's possible to get a tattoo from an artist who is located out of town, it's often more convenient to choose an artist who is based in your local area.

This can make it easier to schedule appointments and follow-up care, as well as giving you the opportunity to visit the artist's studio in person.

However, if you're really impressed by an artist's work and feel that it's worth the extra effort to travel, it might be worth considering.

5. Take the time to get to know them: Finally, it's important to choose an artist who you feel comfortable with and who you can trust. Take the time to get to know them and ask questions. You want to be confident you have chosen the right artist for the job.
