The Artist Behind the Realism
I didn't take the usual route to opening a private studio in Chapeltown, but every step of the way has shaped how I work. I only do black and grey realism, and I take the same care over it that I took running big construction jobs.
From Fine Art to the Building Site
I've been into art since I was a kid. I studied Fine Art at Barnsley College in my late teens with one goal: to become a tattoo artist. I was offered an "apprenticeship" at a studio in Sheffield where I'd been getting tattooed since I was 15, but I soon realised the place was toxic and, like many others at the time, completely unpaid.
I spent the next 18 years in the construction industry. I enjoyed the work, eventually moving from the tools into project management. However, I soon found myself buried in admin, mediating between trades and customers behind a computer screen. I'd fallen out of love with it.
A Second Chance at 35
Lockdown in 2020 gave me the time to think about doing something different. At 35, the "bug" for tattooing returned. A close friend with a studio in West Yorkshire offered to show me the ropes and train me properly. I took to it like a duck to water; within the first week, I knew this was exactly what I was supposed to be doing.
Word got round quickly in that first year, and today most of my work comes by recommendation from people who've sat in the chair. People travel from all over the country, and from Europe, to get tattooed here. I don't spend my time dancing in TikTok videos or chasing social media trends—I'm a bit "long in the tooth" for that. I'd rather put that energy into studying the best realism artists in the world and keep getting better.
Why I Work This Way
I care about getting the detail right, pricing fairly, and getting along with anyone who sits in my chair. I opened my own private, appointment-only studio in Sheffield so I could work without noise and interruptions.
