Black & Grey Realism Tattoo Artist 15 Minutes from Barnsley
I'm Liam. I tattoo black and grey realism and nothing else, on my own, from a private one-room studio in Chapeltown. Barnsley is about 15 minutes away: down the M1 from Junction 36 or 37 to Junction 35, then two minutes into the village. The A61 through Birdwell and Hoyland takes about the same, and the train from Barnsley stops at Chapeltown station, a short walk from the door.

Why People from Barnsley Come to Chapeltown
Chapeltown is 7 miles from Barnsley and 7 miles from Sheffield, on the M1 in between. For most of Barnsley that makes me a shorter trip than the city centre, with no traffic to sit in and no meters. There's free parking on and around Station Road, and I'm two minutes from Junction 35.
The studio at 3A Station Road, Chapeltown, Sheffield S35 2XE is one private room, and it's appointment only. When you're booked in, you're the only client in the building. No front desk, no other artists working next to you, no street door opening and closing all day, so the room stays warm. Bring one person with you if you want the company, put Netflix or your own music on, and we get on with it.
I'm not from far away either. I did a fine art course at Barnsley College in my late teens, spent 18 years in construction, and came back to this in 2020. Most of my work now comes by recommendation from people who've sat in the chair, and people travel from all over the country, and from Europe, to be tattooed here. What I Do, and What It Costs
One style: black and grey realism. Portraits of people and pets, wildlife, mythology, film and TV, memorial pieces, and themed sleeves done in a single sitting, plus realism cover-ups of old tattoos. No colour, no traditional, no fine-line, no lettering-only pieces. I'd rather do one thing properly.
I price by the length of the sitting, not by the design, so you know the number before you book. The minimum is 3 hours, roughly an A5-size piece.
- 3-hour sitting, about A5 size: £270
- 4-hour portrait session, one person or one pet: £350
- 6-hour full day, about A4, a forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh piece: £480
- 8-hour arm sleeve sitting, one full profile, inner or outer: £600
- 10-hour leg sleeve sitting, one full profile: £700
- Fully wrapped arm, inner and outer, across two 8-hour sittings: £1100
- Bigger projects of four or more full days: £400 a day
The deposit is paid online when you book and comes off the total. The balance is paid on the day, in cash or by bank transfer arranged with me. Before your date I send a mock-up of the design so we can sort any small changes and get straight on with it when you arrive.

Around Barnsley
Barnsley town centre is the easy one, but a lot of the people who come here live in the villages between Barnsley and Chapeltown, and for them I'm closer still. Hoyland is about ten minutes down the A6135 and Wortley about the same along the A629. Wombwell and Darfield are around 20 minutes by road over Hoyland, and Wombwell has the same train line as Chapeltown, so that's a short ride with no change. Stocksbridge is about 15 minutes across the A616 through Wortley. Penistone is around 20 minutes by road, or one train straight through Barnsley to Chapeltown. Royston and Cudworth on the north side of Barnsley are about 25 minutes, down the M1 or the A61, whichever you prefer.

- How long does it take to get to you from Barnsley?
- About 15 minutes by car. Come down the M1 from Junction 36 or 37, leave at Junction 35 and the studio is two minutes from the roundabout. - Can I get there by train from Barnsley?
- Yes. Trains from Barnsley Interchange stop at Chapeltown, and the station is a short walk from the studio. It's the Sheffield line, so Wombwell and Elsecar are on the way and Penistone is on the same line the other side of Barnsley, no change needed.
- Is there parking?
- Yes, free parking on and around Station Road. No meters, no car park charges and no city-centre traffic to sit in.
- Do you do walk-ins?
- No. The studio is private and appointment-only, so there's no front desk and nobody to see you without a booking. Book a sitting online, or send your idea through the quote form and I'll tell you which sitting it needs.
- Who will tattoo me?
- Me, Liam. I'm the only artist here. I look at your reference photos, draw the design, send you the mock-up, tattoo it and do the touch-up months later. There are no guest artists, no apprentices and no handover.
- How much is a full day?
- A 6-hour full day is £480, which covers an A4-size piece on the forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh. An 8-hour arm sleeve sitting is £600 and a 10-hour leg sleeve sitting is £700. The deposit is paid online when you book and comes off the total.
- Do you do colour?
- No, black and grey only. I'm colour-blind and can't read a lot of colour in the skin, so I don't offer work I can't judge properly. Black and grey is what I'm good at and it's the style that lasts best. I don't do traditional, fine-line, geometric or lettering-only pieces either.
- Do I need a consultation before I book?
- Not usually. Most people send their idea, placement and reference photos through the quote form and I reply with the right sitting and the price. If you'd rather talk it through in the studio, a 15-minute in-person consultation is £25, and that comes off your tattoo once you book.
