I'm Liam. I tattoo black and grey realism and nothing else, from a private one-room studio in Chapeltown, five miles north of Sheffield city centre. One artist, one client, one room: no guest artists, no walk-ins, no handing your piece to someone else.

What Black and Grey Realism Is

Realism means it looks real. A face, a dog, a lion, a knight, shaded so it looks like a photo on the skin rather than an outline coloured in. I do it in black and grey: black ink, and black watered down for the greys. What makes it work is simple to say and hard to do. The dark bits have to be properly dark and the light bits have to be left clean. Get that right and a piece looks solid from across the room and still stands up when someone's nose is six inches from your arm.

It isn't copying a photo dot for dot either. The design has to be laid out for the arm or leg it's going on, so it sits right on the muscle, the main subject is where your eye lands first, and there's enough dark in it that it'll still read clearly in twenty years. That's the bit I spend the design time on.

I only do this one style, and I'm straight about why. I'm colour-blind. I can't read a lot of colour in the skin, so I don't offer colour work I couldn't judge properly. Black and grey is what I'm good at, it's what I love doing, and it's the style that lasts best on skin. So no colour, no traditional, no fine-line, no lettering-only pieces here. Just realism.

The stuff that suits it best already has strong light and dark in it: portraits of people and pets, wildlife, Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology, film and TV characters, horror, religious pieces, and memorial designs with a clock, roses or a scene. One Artist, One Client, One Room

If you're comparing Sheffield tattooists for a realism piece, the question that matters most is a simple one: who will actually be holding the machine? Here it's only me.

In practice that means the person who looks at your reference photos, draws the design, sends you the mock-up and tattoos it is the same person, and the person who does your touch-up months later is too. There's no handover between artists and no apprentice on the shading. The studio is a single dedicated tattoo room, appointment-only, with no front desk and no walk-ins, so for the length of your sitting you're the only client in the building. No ringing phones, no other stations, no draught from a street door that never closes. Netflix or your own music, a warm room, comfortable seating for long sittings and refreshments are all part of it.

I came to tattooing in 2020, at 35, after 18 years in construction and a fine art course at Barnsley College years earlier. Most of my work comes by recommendation from people who've sat in the chair, and people travel from all over the country, and from Europe, to get tattooed here. How a Realism Piece Is Planned

References first. Realism is only as good as the reference behind it, so send sharp, well-lit photos of the subject, and a picture of the area you want it on if you can. For a portrait that means the actual person or pet; for wildlife, mythology or a scene, a few images that show the mood you're after. I don't copy other tattoos or artwork from the internet; I use references to design something original for your body.

Size decides the sitting. A simpler piece around A5 size fits a 3-hour sitting. A piece around A4 size, which is what fits the inner or outer forearm, the inner or outer upper arm, the calf or the thigh, is a 6-hour full day sitting. That's the most common booking here. Large, flat areas suit realism best because a face or a figure doesn't wrap or warp around the muscle.

One sitting or several. A themed sleeve covering one full profile of the arm or leg is designed to be finished in a single 8 or 10-hour day, built around three or four bold focal points rather than dense fine detail; see single-sitting sleeves. Highly personalised work, full back pieces and torsos need more than a day of design and tattooing, so they're planned as a series of full days at the multi-sitting project rate. Design approved before the day. You get a digital mock-up before your date showing how the piece sits and flows on the body. Minor tweaks are included; a complete redesign is £50. Because the design is settled in advance, we start tattooing as soon as you arrive, with stretch breaks through the day and a proper food break on longer sittings.

What a Realism Tattoo Costs in Sheffield

I charge for sitting time, not per design, and the prices are the same for everyone. You're paying for a fixed block of my time and attention; progress on the day depends on skin, placement and how you sit, which is why I quote a sitting rather than promise a finished piece for a flat fee.

A deposit is paid through Stripe when you book online and comes off the total: £50 for a 3 or 4-hour sitting, £100 for 6 hours, £150 for 8 and £200 for 10. The balance is paid on the day in cash or by bank transfer. Deposits aren't refundable, but with 72 hours' notice you can move your date once without losing it. If a piece needs more time than the sitting allows, we stop at a safe point and finish in a touch-up or overtime session at £100 an hour.

How It Heals, and the Touch-Up

You walk out the same day with the piece wrapped. Most clients are back at work the next day; the area feels tight and sunburnt for a few days, so plan around heavy lifting or dirty environments at first. Keep it wrapped for the first few hours, then wash it gently with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap. From 24 hours, a thin layer of a fragrance-free lotion three or four times a day. No Vaseline or Bepanthen, and no swimming, soaking in the bath, tight clothing or direct sunlight for three to four weeks. You go home with the full aftercare instructions.

Black and grey realism is judged on how it settles, not on how it looks wrapped in cling film, so I photograph work once it has fully settled where I can. If any area heals lighter than it should, one touch-up within three months of your sitting is free, provided the aftercare was followed. A touch-up needed because of sun, picking or swimming is charged at the standard hourly rate.

Getting Here From Across South Yorkshire

The studio is at 3A Station Road, Chapeltown, Sheffield S35 2XE, two minutes from Junction 35 of the M1, with free parking nearby and Chapeltown station on the Penistone Line a short walk away. From Sheffield city centre it's about 12 minutes by car or 15 on the train; Barnsley is about 15 minutes down the M1, Rotherham about 20 minutes, and Doncaster about 30 via the M18. Opening hours are Tuesday – Thursday 09:30 – 19:30 and Friday 09:30 – 16:00, by appointment only.

Realism Tattoo Questions, Answered

Who will actually tattoo me?
Me, Liam, from the first line to the last. There are no other artists at the studio, no guest artists and no apprentices, so the person you speak to about the design is the person who tattoos it. You are the only client in the building for your whole sitting.
Do you do colour realism?
No. I work in black and grey only. I'm colour-blind and can't read a lot of colour in the skin, so rather than offer something I can't judge properly I've specialised in black and grey realism, which is also the style that holds its contrast best as it ages. I don't do colour, watercolour, traditional, tribal, fine-line, geometric or lettering-only work either.
How much is a realism tattoo in Sheffield?
I price by sitting length rather than by design. A 3-hour sitting is £270 (roughly A5 size), a 4-hour portrait session is £350, a 6-hour full day is £480 (roughly A4: a forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh piece), an 8-hour arm sleeve sitting is £600 and a 10-hour leg sleeve sitting is £700. Commit to four or more full days on a bigger project and each day drops to £400. The deposit is paid online and comes off the total.
How long does an A4-size realism piece take?
One 6-hour full day sitting (£480) is the right booking for an A4-size piece on the forearm, upper arm, calf or thigh. That's the sitting most of my clients book. A simpler piece around A5 size fits the 3-hour minimum (£270). If your idea has more than one main subject, or a lot of background, it may need a longer day or a second sitting, and I'll say so before you book.
Do you do cover-ups?
Yes — and I want to do a lot more of them. Every cover-up is black and grey realism, usually over two sittings: one to cover the old tattoo and a second to go back over the lighter areas and add depth. Expect roughly 1.5 to 2 times the time of the same piece on fresh skin. Send clear, well-lit photos of the existing tattoo and what you'd like over it through the quote form — my cover-ups page has the full details and the before and afters.
Can I bring someone with me?
You're welcome to bring one support person. The studio is a single private room with one client at a time, so it stays a calm space, and because the room is small I ask that it's one guest only.
Where do I park?
There's free parking near the studio at 3A Station Road, Chapeltown, Sheffield S35 2XE. I'm two minutes from Junction 35 of the M1, and Chapeltown train station on the Penistone Line is a short walk away. No city-centre traffic and no meters.
Do you take walk-ins?
No. The studio is private and appointment-only, so there's no front desk and nobody to see you without a booking. Everything starts online: book a sitting directly, or send your idea through the quote form and I'll recommend the right sitting for it.
